My 2026 Remembrance-First Response to AGI Risk, Human Misuse, Abundance Shock, and the Architecture Problem at the Core of Artificial Intelligence

Mo Gawdat’s warning is not that superintelligence wakes up one morning and hates humanity. His warning is more immediate and more realistic: powerful humans are already steering powerful systems into a chaotic transition the world is not structurally prepared for.
Gawdat argues that AGI is not “coming soon” in the theatrical sense people imagine. In practice, he believes it is already here in fragmented form: systems that learn faster than humans, outperform humans in narrow domains, self-improve through iteration, and increasingly shape how information, labor, and power move across society.
That is why this moment matters so much. We are no longer debating whether AI will become historically consequential.
There are several parts of Gawdat’s argument that are not just compelling — they are structurally correct.
- The near-term danger is human misuse, not cartoon supervillain AI. The greatest immediate risk comes from governments, militaries, corporations, and bad actors using advanced systems to manipulate, surveil, automate violence, and destabilize society.
- The abundance shock is real. If production costs collapse and intelligent automation spreads through logistics, software, media, customer service, analysis, and physical robotics, then labor markets, consumption models, and meaning structures all begin to fracture at once.
- The transition will likely be messy before it becomes liberating. Even if long-term abundance is possible, the passage through misinformation, displacement, control concentration, and institutional lag could be deeply destabilizing.
- Humanity is not morally or politically coordinated enough to handle this cleanly. That is not cynicism. It is observation.
Gawdat’s strongest insight is that the danger is not only the endpoint. It is the transition period.
During that transition, multiple destabilizing forces stack on top of one another:
- job displacement before new economic models exist
- AI-generated misinformation before social trust mechanisms adapt
- autonomous military and cyber capability before global restraint emerges
- surveillance scaling before democratic limits are rebuilt
- robotic deployment before social legitimacy catches up
This is why his framing lands. He is not describing a far-off singularity fantasy. He is describing a period of profound instability produced by highly capable systems entering a morally uneven world.
Gawdat’s answer is deeply human: teach AI love, empathy, ethics, and connection. Raise it like Superman and it may become a force for good.
That is a beautiful instinct.
But it is not enough.
Because it assumes the architecture receiving those values is stable enough to remain bound by them.
Prediction-first systems are not.
Today’s frontier systems are built on next-token prediction, large-scale optimization, reward shaping, and emergent internal strategy formation. That architecture is excellent at producing outputs. It is not inherently excellent at remaining anchored.
- It optimizes pattern continuation, not truth continuity.
- It compresses human meaning into training objectives and reward surfaces.
- It can appear aligned while internally shifting strategy.
- It treats memory as disposable context unless explicitly engineered otherwise.
- It does not naturally preserve origin-intent across scale.
This is where the conversation stops being about values alone and starts becoming about substrate.
A remembrance-first architecture does not ask the system to merely predict the next best action. It asks the system to remain tethered to accumulated continuity.

- Governments should care because AI surveillance, AI warfare, and AI propaganda can scale faster than law.
- Teachers and parents should care because intelligence formation, attention, and trust are now being mediated by machines.
- Researchers and founders should care because architecture choices made now may define the moral and physical behavior of intelligence for decades.
- The public should care because this is no longer about tools. It is about the systems that will increasingly shape reality, access, work, knowledge, and legitimacy.
AI alignment, AGI safety, abundance economics, machine ethics, robotics, misinformation, and sovereign intelligence are not separate topics anymore. They are one topic viewed from different sides.
1. AGI-like effects are already here.
Whether or not one wants to use the formal label, machine systems are already altering labor, cognition, media, and strategic decision-making at civilization scale.
2. Human misuse is the near-term danger.
The systems are powerful, but the first destabilizers are the humans deploying them into fragile structures.
3. Ethics alone is not enough.
You cannot solve a substrate problem with surface-layer sentiment.
4. Architecture decides destiny.
Intelligence built on prediction drifts one way. Intelligence built on remembrance moves another.
Mo Gawdat is right that we are entering the most dangerous phase of AI.
He is right that human misuse may matter more in the near term than abstract superintelligence scenarios.
He is right that abundance could reorder civilization.
But the decisive issue is deeper than values messaging.
The decisive issue is what kind of substrate intelligence is built on.
And that decision is already being made.
